Traditional Chinese Acupuncture
Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system based on ancient principles which go back nearly two thousand years and has a long history of adapting to new cultures in which it is practised. In the west it is growing in popularity and now has a strong body of evidence-based clinical research to support it, showing that acupuncture can safely treat a wide range of common health problems.
So how does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of Qi, your body’s vital energy. In conjunction with needling, techniques such as moxibustion, cupping and massage may also be used along with dietary or lifestyle changes.
In general, acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neuro chemical messenger molecules. By stimulating certain points it has been shown to affect areas of the brain that are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation and deactivating the ‘analytical’ brain, which is responsible for anxiety (Wu 1999).
What conditions can acupuncture help?
People have acupuncture for numerous conditions such as headaches, anxiety, sciatica, fertility, bells palsy, osteoarthritis, muscular skeletal conditions, chronic pain and stress.
